Position: Core Staff
North Star: Self-Directed Learning for Teens has been making school optional for teens in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts since 1996. The Core Staff of 8-10 diversely talented individuals is the team that creates the program and works with the teen members and their families.
We are looking for a person familiar with homeschooling, unschooling, and self-directed education who is seeking to work in a community and be part of a trusting and collegial staff.
North Star is organized as a community center, offering freedom to teens to create their own routines. We support our members to take on challenges at their own pace. North Star does not offer grades, credits, nor diplomas. North Star uses Restorative Practices as a basis for conflict resolution. Core staff members fully understand and embrace this approach.
Job specifics: 15 hours per week, 600 hours per year (September-June), salary range $15,000-$19,200 ($25-$32/hour, based on specific experience)
Tasks include:
- Teaching 2-3 classes per week
- Advising 6-8 teens on a weekly basis, including conducting parent meetings
- Attending weekly staff meetings
- Tutoring individual teens in specific areas of mutual interest
- Supervising and sitting in the common room as needed
